Meet the candidates:

Farrah Douglas is the founder and CEO of a successful business in Carlsbad, CDS Printing, and has enjoyed an impressive record as a political and business leader in North County over the past twenty-one years. As a candidate for City Council in 2010, Farrah received the highest number of votes any council candidate has received in Carlsbad history. She is also the first immigrant to be elected to the council. Currently, Farrah serves as Carlsbad’s representative on several regional boards including San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), the League of California Cities, and the San Diego County Water Authority Board (SDCWA). In these roles, Farrah deals with complex and multi-faceted issues such as the expansion of I-5 Freeway, immigration and border security, the state’s current financial instability and the Governor’s attempt to raid local governments’ coffers.

Sherry Hodges is an Encinitas resident and San Diego County native. She currently serves as Assemblywoman Diane Harkey’s Chief of Staff, and previously served as District Director for Assemblyman Martin Garrick. Prior to that Sherry was a representative for then-Assemblyman Mark Wyland, and also served as District Director for Senator Mimi Walters. She was an elected member of the San Dieguito Union High School Board, where she represented the district on the boards of the Encinitas Crime Prevention Taskforce and Site Planning for La Costa Canyon High School. Sherry is one of the founding members of the California Women’s Leadership Association – San Diego Chapter and currently serves as a state board member to the organization, which mentors women who seek careers in public service. Sherry currently serves as Second Vice-Chair to the San Diego County Republican Party.

Born in Los Angeles, Rocky Chavez grew up in the fields alongside his father, who taught him how to pick grapes – and also the value of a job well done. Rocky never left the fields even through college, when he supported himself by harvesting almonds in order to earn a Bachelor’s degree from California State University in Chico. Then, Rocky spent more than 28 years as a United States Marine, rising to the rank of Colonel and being appointed Chief of Staff for the 4th Marine Division. After serving his country, Rocky then went on to spend nearly a decade on the Oceanside City Council. In 2009, Rocky was appointed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and made the journey to Sacramento to serve as Undersecretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Later, Rocky served as Acting Secretary. Rocky has served on several local boards including the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, KOCT Oceanside Community Television, Women’s Resource Center. Education matters to Rocky, who coached varsity wrestling at El Camino High School and was the Chief Education Officer for the School of Business and Technology Charter High School in Oceanside.
